PASE Training Policies and Procedures
PASE leads the field in offering professional development for beginners, advanced practitioners, program managers, and executive directors of afterschool agencies.
By investing in professional development, afterschool practitioners in New York City and across the country are better able to create innovative, effective programs for young people. Through these programs, youth develop their academic competencies as well as skills in such areas as technology, critical thinking, oral and written communication, career development, and acceptance of individuals from various backgrounds.

3/4 & 3/18 - Creating a Sexuality-Friendly Agency Institute: A Toolkit for Afterschool Providers*
This Training is Full and Closed
This two-session institute will provide a forum for participants to learn techniques for effectively communicating with youth about sexuality, and to plan individualized strategies for promoting discussions and education about sexuality at their afterschool programs. At the end the institute, the participants will know how to create an “askable” and approachable environment for youth in relation to sexuality and other sensitive topics. Participants will also develop a plan to transform the physical environment at their respective agencies into a more sexuality-friendly environment through the use of educational materials, new administrative policies, and other resources.
*You are eligible to register for this two-session institute if you have attended a minimum of three Planned Parenthood of New York City trainings offered at PASE during the 2009-2010 Academic Year.

3/22 – Advancing Communities for Youth (ACY) RFP Information Session

PASE recently released an RFP for training, TA and sub-awards for our Advancing Communities for Youth (ACY) Program. Through a grant from the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Community Services (OCS), funded through the Compassion Capital Fund PASE will deliver free capacity building services through the provision of training, technical assistance, and 20 sub-awards of $10k-$15k. With this grant, PASE will assist faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) with capacity building activities in four critical areas: 1) leadership development, 2) organizational development, 3) program development, and 4) community engagement. These capacity building activities are designed to increase an organization's sustainability and effectiveness, enhance its ability to provide social services, and create collaborations to better serve at-risk youth.
This information session will introduce project goals and include a review of the RFP and program guidelines. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions about the RFP.
Participants should bring a copy of the RFP with them to the information session.

3/25 –Strategies for the General Operating Support Proposal Process

While it may feel hard to come by, general operating support is critical to sustaining program operations. This session reviews the entire process for securing general operating support. Through a combination of facilitated conversation and exercises, participants will review how to frame requests as well as identify 3-4 emerging needs and consider how to build those into the general support proposal. Participants will assess the landscape of funders to ensure they are targeting the appropriate sources. Lastly participants will examine how to begin and sustain the dialogue with prospective funders.

An organization’s health and longevity are due in part to the effectiveness of the relationship between the Executive Director and the board of directors. In this session executive directors will learn about the fundamental elements that lead to better board functioning, will have an opportunity to assess their organization against these elements and will gain new insights from current literature on boards. By workshop’s end, participants will have begun to develop an action plan for strengthening their board’s contribution.

4/6 – Behavior Management Training of the Trainers

Does your staff need help managing difficult behavior at your site? In this half-day workshop, site directors will learn strategies for providing effective in-house staff development workshops by examining different learning styles and methods for creating relevant training objectives and agendas. Participants will then use these techniques to create a behavior management workshop for line staff. Attendees will receive sample agendas and supporting materials to be used when training staff.
SACC regulations satisfied: (1) Principals of childhood development, including the appropriate supervision of children, meeting the needs of children enrolled in the program with physical or emotional challenges and behavior management and discipline; (3) Child day care program development.

4/16 - Sidewalk Sampler: An Introduction to the Sidewalks Arts Program with Copy of Curriculum

Using PASE’s Sidewalk Curriculum Guide as a foundation, this workshop focuses on introducing a structure that seamlessly combines youth development with quality arts instruction. The Guide provides a framework for implementing a successful year-round program that adheres to the philosophy of the Sidewalk Curriculum for teaching in four areas of the arts: Creative Writing, Music, Movement; Acting and Storytelling, and Visual Arts, and a section devoted to Personal Development, a vital component of the program. PASE recognizes that each community organization is unique, so the curriculum is structured to be as flexible and adaptable as possible.
This workshop will unpack various components of PASE's Sidewalk Arts Curriculum Guide Participants will experience sample activities from the guide and receive their own copy of the full Sidewalk Arts Curriculum Guide which includes guiding principles, personal development curricula, arts curricula with sample lesson plans and a comprehensive resource section.

4/22 - Keeping Children Healthy: Supporting Good Nutrition

Do your youth participants love fast food? Do they understand how to balance their food options? In this workshop, participants will review nutrition principles and discuss current eating behaviors, physical activities and lifestyle trends that impact children’s health. Participants will explore ways to make healthy choices with limited resources and ways to encourage and model healthy behavior to youth and their families. 5/11 - Safety Planning for Supervisors

As a program director, you are responsible for ensuring that youth are protected and for making sure that staff understand appropriate safety protocols and procedures. In this workshop, participants will learn how to spot safety hazards and make appropriate changes to keep youth safe; safety procedures for indoor and outdoor environments, such as fire drills, evacuations, field trips and travel, and inter-agency communication; and how to create effective communication and emergency response systems with program stakeholders. Participants will also review School Age Child Care (SACC) regulations related to safety and begin formalizing their site's safety plan. Finally, participants will discuss methods for training and supporting staff in learning and utilizing their program's safety systems.

This 3-hour training introduces participants to the KidzLit framework that is a model where children learn by doing, in highly engaging activities through a 5-part process. Participants will have a hands-on experience with the 5-part process, see the program in action with real children, learn about the materials, gain knowledge of strategies for promoting cooperation among kids, and have an opportunity to get to know the wonderful literature used in the KidzLit program.

6/8 – Child Abuse Prevention: Identification & Reporting

Knowing how to identify cases of child maltreatment and abuse is critical for any youth practitioner. In this workshop, participants will learn how to identify physical and behavioral indicators of child abuse and maltreatment. The workshop will also cover when and how a report must be made and actions the reporter is mandated or authorized to take.

This Training Series is offered through the DOE Student Support Services Contract for School-based Afterschool Programs
PASE is pleased to announce an unique opportunity for afterschool program directors and coordinators to work with school principals and parent coordinators to strengthen the school day-afterschool connection.
How does it work? Principals hire PASE through their Student Support Services contract to train on-site afterschool staff in areas that will improve student success and help meet the accountability goals of each school this year.
These trainings include:
An intake interview with the principal and afterschool staff to customize a training series suited to each school
A three-part training series at your site - at a time convenient to you and your staff
A follow-up interview with school and afterschool staff and an opportunity to receive on-site technical assistance

New Paths to Literacy
Improving Academic Performance Through Afterschool Engagement
Keeping Kids Healthy and Safe
Please note: All of these trainings will provide training hours required for SACC licensing
Who can participate? Any school-based site can work with their principal and PASE to customize a training series that suits their collective goals. PASE will also work with cohorts of schools that are willing to combine their efforts to host trainings.
